First, let me announce a new house rule that was implemented (and is now "canon" to running a Cairnvarthi campaign). When you roll a 1 on a death save, RAW, you get two failures. When you roll a 20, however, you automatically come back to life with 1hp. We decided that's not balanced with itself, so from now on in our games, rolling a 1 on a death save means you're automatically dead. This will make lower levels more deadly for sure. Once characters hit fifth level and have available it becomes less serious, and of course once they hit 9th and have access to it just makes for a good tavern story.
After dispatching the zombie ogres, the party entered an old, decrepit library. To the south through an archway they saw a hearth burning with a Chaotic, purple flame. Robin decided to go investigate by himself, and was dropped dead after being ganged up on by a swarm of zombie orcs that materialized out of the fire.
After taking care of the monsters, the group moved to the final room. An avatar of Tchort appeared and said, "I had hopes for the lot of you... now look at your horrible GOOD souls! Disgusting! Now... behold a true Knight of Orcus!" At that point, an armored creature rose from behind an altar and attacked.
(Click here for the Knight of Orcus stats.)
It took a handful of rounds for the group to defeat the Knight, but they did end up victorious (especially thanks to Riardon using Conjure Animal to summon a giant elk which attacked the Knight from behind). I unfortunately forgot about playing up his Legendary Actions as often as I should have, so I'm excited for the next time they run into one of these baddies.
They found a note identifying the Knight as being named Golthurn, which gave them a frame of reference for the map they had previously found. They also learned from the note that someone named Morkar was hoping that Golthurn would secure a location (which is on the found map) named Dlir's Tower. It also mentioned the character directly; Morkar somehow knew they were being teleported to the area by Geam Swie!
This is where we left off for the evening; the adventure continues tomorrow night!
